Teaching Kids That Kindness Matters

A few months ago, I decided to touch on a topic with my kids: kindness matters. It’s so crucial for kids to be taught empathy and kindness. In a world where cruelty and rudeness are often highlighted, I wanted an open ended conversation to begin in our home.

How We Are Teaching Kindness Matters

The first thing that I realized is that having regular conversations about kindness made a huge impact on my kids. Each morning, during our routines we talk about simple ways we are going to be kind to one another. Having an open dialogue allows them to communicate to me instances where someone has been hurtful to them and how they responded.

Make Your Home A Safe Place

If your children come to you with a situation where they may not have responded in kind allow it to be done so in a “safe place”. You can empathize with them and help them problem solve. You may have your own stories to share to help them relate.

Have A Kindness Matters Game

Every once in a while, host a family “Kindness Matters” game. Give your kids assignments to choose from: smile at a stranger, share a special treat, give a toy to someone in need, make someone laugh, etc. At the end of the week, compare notes and ask your children how they felt. Exchange your stories and take note on their responses.

How are you teaching your children that kindness matters?

Bucket List For Your Family: Things To Do This Spring Break

The weather is starting to warm where we are which means spring is looming around the bend! I love watching the trees bud and listening to the birds each morning. Spring is such a breath of fresh air after the long cold months where we live!

Last year, I created a family bucket list for fall activities and decided to make a spring bucket list, too. Family traditions are such an important part of family culture that I wanted to implement them for the spring season and Easter Holiday!

Tip: Whenever you set out to create a bucket list, include your kids! Let them know that this will be a special family time. When you prepare kids for outings like this they tend to be more engaged and excited about the idea!

8 Ideas For Things To Do This Spring Break

  • Visit A Daffodil Festival: These festivals are usually a fun place to mingle, take pictures, sample fun foods and take a bouquet of flowers home! In our area, these tend to take place in March or April.
  • Try A New Egg Painting Trick: Dying eggs for Easter are such a fun activity, but this year, try a new decorating trick. Maybe watercolor the eggs, instead!
  • Go For A Drive in the Country: Spring is the perfect time to roll down the windows and go for a long drive. Vivaldi’s Spring comes to mind for music!
  • Visit A Local Gardens: Do you have a garden area that offers special spring festivals? My favorite is attending the tulip festival and a local master Gardner area.
  • Plant a garden or pot of flowers: This is such a great learning opportunity for the kids. Plant vegetables or flowers together!
  • Go Hiking: It’s a great time of year to be out and about with your family in nature. I love going to the mountains this time of year for stunning views of lush greens and riverscapes.
  • Go On A Nature Walk: Does your community offer a nature trail? Let your kids collect nature items and take pictures of current blooms. It could easily turn into a great science lesson!
  • Pick Berries: Berry picking can change depending on your area, but strawberries are typically available for picking in our area during the late spring. Which makes me think its a great excuse for making a Strabwerry Pie!

Do you have a favorite spring family tradition? I would love to hear about it!

Spring Cleaning Tips For The Kitchen

Spring is right around the corner which means it’s time to spring clean the house! And dare I say, it is one of my favorite times of the year? I love the freshness that spring cleaning brings to the home after a long winter.

Today, I’m sharing a few simple and fun spring cleaning hacks for the kitchen.

Start With Removing Everything Off the Counter Tops

I like to start with the counter tops. Remove everything off the counters and place them on the dining table. This is a great time to get into the corners of your kitchen and wipe down the backslash. I love to use a wet cloth to clean my backslash. Wipe down the counters and each item as you add it back.

Tip: If you have dirty grout, you may want to use a cotton swab to really deep clean those deeper grooved areas.

Don’t Forget Your Appliances!

This is a great time to clean your appliances! Anything that can be put into the dishwasher, do so now. Then do a quick wipe down of all the appliances. I also like to do a quick wipe down of the fridge, microwave, stove top and any other appliance.

Tip: If you have a removable tray in your fridge water dispenser, this is a great time to remove it and deep clean that area. This often gets overlooked and the build up can get out of hand quickly.

Focus on Hardware and Cabinets In the Kitchen

Take time to wipe down your kitchen door knobs, fridge handles, stove handles and even your coffee pot handles. I try to wipe down the knobs on my stove as well.

This is also a great time to do a sweep of the cabinets and drawers!

Tip: If you have wet wipes, these work well on grease!

Give Your Floors A Shine

The kitchen floors get grimy so fast! I like to sweep, swiffer and mop the floors. If you have hard to reach areas with build up, you may want to spray a safe flooring cleaner on those areas before you tackle them with a mop.

Tip: If you are out of swiffer pads, a paper towel works great in it’s place!

End The Day With A Shiny Sink

Now that your kitchen is sparkling, it’s time to clean the sink. Depending on the time of sink you have you may want to find which is the safest option to keep it scratch free. Personally, I like to sprinkle a little basking soda and then use a soft scrubber to get all the grim out and then rinse with hot water. Works like a charm!

Tip: You can read my smelly sink cleaning hack here!

Happy Spring Cleaning! Pin for future reference. 🙂

How To Save Money on Medical Costs

We have had our fair share of medical bills thanks to a week long stay at the hospital, random after hour clinic visits and ER visits. We have learned a few simple ways to save money on medical bills that can easily apply to anyone.

This information is meant for educational purposes only. I’m not a financial expert. Just sharing tips from our own journey.

Stay Up To Date With Your Insurance Coverage and Cost

One way to stay on top of medical costs is to keep up to date with your Insurance plan and costs. Whenever there is a change in insurance, you will want to read up on what changes have taken place, why their is a cost increase, etc. It may be that you need a new plan or need to shop for a new insurance to make sure you have the best plan for your family.

Ask For Pricing Options at the Doctor’s Office

During a routine visit at the doctors office, they went out of their way to give me different options for medical check up pricing. This is often available for anyone and will depend on your Insurance Plan. Case in point: If your children need well check-ups for school, your health care provider may have a discount for school check-ups as opposed to traditional check ups. Our provider offered a 50% discount for school required check-ups.

Negotiate Medical Bills

When you receive your bill in the mail from the hospital immediately call to see what discount are available. They will often work to decrease your overall statement. It may take time so be patient!

Also, if you are struggling to make payments, they will often work to create a better payment plan to suit your financial situation.

How To Make Money As A Beginner Blogger

Once your web site is set up, you have a few posts going, you will want to start applying to participate with influencer campaigns. This means you will sign up to possibly review brands, write product essays, etc.

NOTE: A lot of people skip this step thinking they need thousands of page views. Not always! A lot of influencer platforms will take in your social status as a whole. Meaning, they will not only be looking at your blog, but also your social media accounts: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Even the amount of followers on Pinterest will be taken into account.

Personally, I would check out the following programs:

  • Fohr
  • The Sway
  • Heartbeat

More Ways To Make Money As A New Blogger

Another easy way to start increasing your income as a new blogger is to set up ads. There are many ad networks to choose from. Google Adsense being one of the most well known and probably the easiest to join.

Sell A Blog Service That You Can Offer

Another idea is to sell a service that you are proficient at. For example, you may be whiz at Pinterest and understand Pinterest Marketing. You could set up a side gig helping other bloggers share their best pins! Or maybe you are a graphic designer and could help with Pin designs! Here’s a few ideas:

  • Create Blog Headers or Pin Designs For Bloggers
  • Offer Stock Photos or Photo Editing For Bloggers
  • Offer Social Media Management

Final Thoughts On Your New Blog Journey

When it comes to bogging, the sky is the limit. The trick is to diversify your blog with multiple streams of income right away. That way you can find which avenue works best for you and work from there. I made my first $50 by working this angle from the very beginning.
